Everyday Dresses

Not every dress announces its length. The pieces gathered here are grouped by how often you will reach for them rather than by where the hem happens to fall, and they are generally the ones that wear out first.

Each is built around a single idea — a draped shoulder, a run of ruffles, a knit that holds its shape — instead of around an event in a diary. Knit and cotton show up most, with velvet and satin appearing where a dress is expected to work after dark as well as before it. Construction stays simple: something that goes on quickly and is still comfortable eleven hours later.

The colours sit at the wearable end of the range. Brown, pink, black and navy form the base, with olive, blue and burgundy widening it a little. Nothing in this group depends on a season or on a stated dress code.

Repetition is the real test. A casual dress earns its keep by being the one pulled out on a morning when nothing has been decided yet, and by still looking deliberate across a table that evening. Some lean toward a date night and others toward a wedding you are attending rather than standing up in; most will do either without being asked twice.
