Midi Dresses

Midi is the length that refuses to declare itself, and that turns out to be its whole usefulness. The hem lands below the knee and above the ankle, so the dress reads as considered without reading as an occasion.

It is the most portable shape in a wardrobe for exactly that reason. A satin midi will sit through a wedding ceremony and then behave itself at the dinner afterwards. Rayon drapes and travels without complaint. Lace and velvet push the same hemline toward the evening, while knit, denim and cotton pull it back toward daylight.

In black or navy this length comes close to a uniform: the dress you own for the events you did not plan for. Burgundy, brown and olive are a warmer version of the same argument. Red and green ask to be noticed. White, pink and blue read lighter and belong to summer.

The practical case is the shoe. A flat sandal, a boot, a low heel and a high one all sit correctly beneath a midi hem, which is not true of anything shorter or longer, and it means one dress covers a wedding guest slot, a cocktail hour, a formal lunch and a casual evening. The length adapts to all four; the fabric decides which one you are dressed for.
